Overview

Sushi hyo, located at 189 Goondoon St in Gladstone Central, is a notable addition to the local Japanese dining scene. This sushi train-style restaurant offers a fresh take on traditional Japanese fare, combining a lively atmosphere with a modern ordering system via tablet. The setup caters well to a casual crowd seeking both sushi and cooked dishes, making it a versatile option for varied palates.

The main highlights include the Teriyaki Chicken, Wagyu Aburi, and slices of pork belly, which showcase the kitchen's range beyond raw sushi. The Wagyu Aburi, in particular, stands out for its rich, smoky flavor, while the Teriyaki Chicken provides generous portions, although some find the sauce leaning on the sweeter, bottled side. Sushi hyo’s adaptation of sushi features a surprising focus on cooked and marinated items, reflecting a local twist that might challenge traditional expectations but offers comfort to diners preferring milder flavors.

The sushi train itself adds a dynamic, interactive element to the dining experience. Plates glide by on the conveyor, allowing diners to select dishes intuitively while complementing the quick and efficient digital ordering. Such a system enhances the flow of service, though some find value in opting for freshly prepared items for optimal taste, especially when it comes to the wasabi and salmon rolls.

In terms of ambiance, the space is clean and vibrant but could benefit from touches like classical Japanese music or subtle decor enhancements to enrich the cultural immersion. Friendly staff and attentive service would further elevate the experience, ensuring a warm welcome that matches the quality on the plate.

Sushi hyo successfully fills a niche in Gladstone, attracting locals and visitors looking for authentic yet approachable Japanese cuisine. Its balance of fresh sashimi, cooked options, and interactive dining makes it suitable for families, casual groups, and sushi enthusiasts alike. While it may not fully replicate the nuanced flavors of traditional Japanese dining, it offers a satisfying and convenient taste of Japan with a contemporary Australian twist.

The sushi train is nice. I Ordered using the ipad. I noticed the sushinwas jsut of the train anyway. Its quiet expensive for what it was 60 dollars for 4 plates of sushi and a plate of kind fish sushimi I must say i was dissapiinted with the prawn sushi it was mainly batter. Came back a second time the sushi was fresh how ever the salmon rolls had very little Salmon in it. The photos that says 2nd time is the last time i was there. I suggest you pay the 1 dollar and order the fresh wasabi it so much nicer 4 plats 38 dollars

Some pointers, classical Japanese music and perhaps a water feature would imbue the experience with some much needed charm. Food was delicious and nicely priced too. Maybe it's the result of a long day but please remember to smile

I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken hot meal through the ipad. Total $17.70 It came nice and quick. Generous portions of chicken, juicy and cooked well but the Teriyaki sauce tasted like it was from a bottle and not housemade. It was very overpowering. It came with a good portion or rice and lettuce leaves with sesame dressing I had enough to take home for another meal

I mostly like the train concept, place was lively and clean. As for the food it was good, but as a Canadian I was surprised that sushi here is mostly… cooked, with a lot of chicken, cooked fish and mayo..? I’d probably order a meal next visit.

Very impressed. Gladstone isn't known as a town that offers many culinary delights, so it was a pleasant surprise to find this Sushi train style restaurant tucked away at the edge of the Gladstone Valley Shopping Centre. Although it was almost full when we arrived, our party of 4 were seated straight away. Ordering is done via a tablet terminal. Food and drinks arrived quickly, and in the right order (entre first, followed by mains). Excellent quality sushi, sashimi, and cooked dishes. We will definitely dine here again. Recommended.

Food is amazing, especially with the choice from the side dishes as a light meal. What we’ve ordered: Takoyaki - Deep fried Octopus Balls (sweet and sour seafood with octopus spice) Okonomiyaki - Vegetable pancake (may contain meat, im not sure) Tempura Prawn Udon - Noodles with tempura prawns and light vegetables for added flavour Food - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Really delicious, especially for me being picky when it comes to “foreign” food. The choices we had is surprisingly delicious Service - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Theres some fresh and regular staff, but because they rotate every couple of months, consistency can we debatable. Especially tonight, it was quite busy but few front service staff had to train one guy which can disrupt the flow of service. Especially being korean speaking english, I understand the struggle especially he mostly does cooking hot and side meals. Otherwise be respectful to them, especially criticism. Atmosphere - ⭐⭐⭐ The atmosphere was okay but a bit tense for whatever it was, i guess its because of what is going on in the middle where they make the sushi-rolls. I can understand what they were saying in korean, but it was a bit uncomfortable when they have their side convo whilst we are eating. Sounds harsh, but atmosphere wise is a bit tense, but the food is distractingly good. Overall - I do recommend this place if you are planning to eat something light or try out the ones i’ve tried. Its surprisingly good (except if you are gluten free or seafood allergic) It is a well balance experience, however please respect the staff, cause i know what it is like to learn another language, especially in a situation i’ve mentioned. Otherwise, give it a go
